Jesuits in Social Action - JESA

Jesuits in Social Action (JESA) is the Social Action Sector of the Society of Jesus in South Asia. It is the coordinating organ of the social actions works of the 18 Provinces and 2 Regions in South Asian Assistancy. South Asian Assistancy comprises of India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh. has a Secretary who cooridinates all the Social Action Activities of the Assistancy. JESA attempts to translate Jesuit ideals into practice, standing by the marginalised, enabling the downtrodden groups to move towards empowerment, especially of dalits, tribals, youth, women, children and unorganized

Gujarat Province (GUJarat) has 9 Social Action centres in the state of Gujarat. They are:

  • St. Xavier's Social Service Society (SXSSS), Ahmedabad
  • Nayay Darshan (Vadodara)

The Major Activities of these centres are:

Ashadeep Human Development Centre

Youth Education Service (YES); Community Organisation and Rural Development (CORD); Ankur - Preparing and orienting promising youth for Public Administration, Banks, Judiciary and other sectors; Career Guidance Cell; Legal Education and Awareness Program (LEAP).

Navsarjan Trust

Formation and Training of women's Associations; Rag-pickers Association, Youth Clubs, Hawkers Union etc.; Legal Consultancy services and legal awareness programs; Pre-school literacy and remedial classes for children; non-formal education for street children and child labourers; vocational training for women.

Promotion of Justice and Human Rights; Advocacy on issues related to vulnerable and marginalized groups like adivasis, dalits and minorities; Legal aid; Support systems for victims of injustice and human rights violation; Education and awareness programmes on citizenship and constitutional rights.

Rajpipla Social Service Society

Raise critical awareness among the tribals of Southern Gujarat; Impart cultural education; Establish adivasi identity; Cultivate a healthy political consciousness; Help the adivasi community to know their rights and organize itself into a strong and effective movement.

SANGATH

Target Group: Marginalized women of all communities; Panchayatiraj and women's empowerment; Holistic perspective of comprehensive women's health; Awareness of human rights and legal aid; Para legal training; Youth training; Micro credit for women; Promotion of Organic Farming.

SHAKTI - Legal Aid and Human Rights Centre (LAHRC)

Imparting Legal Education, Assistance and Guidance through Legal Awareness - Seminars and Training Programmes, Paralegal Training for Grass Root Workers, Grooming of Adivasi Advocates, Legal Guidance, Out-of-court Settlement, Legal Proceedings in the Court; Human Rights Education; Form People's Organizations; Support to Unorganized Labourers; Networking; Special activities for children.

St. Xavier's Non Formal Education Society (Behavioural Science Centre [BSC])

Empowering the grassroot people by developing people's organization; Capacity building of primary level women's savings and credit cooperative for economic empowerment; Promoting child development centres as models of value based learning; Empowering elected political representatives from scheduled castes for good governance, academic programmes, action studies, legal awareness programmes through dissemination of legal magazines and trainings and legal advocacy for socio-legal reform.

St. Xavier's Social Service Society (SXSSS)

The works are in the slums of Ahmedabad city on the following 4 inter-related areas namely Education, Health, Environment and Community organization.

  • Innovative Educational program &endash; for slum children
  • Loyola Evening School &endash; for poor children
  • National Institute of Open Schooling &endash; for slow learners and drop outs
  • Organizing people and forming community based organizations
  • Community health improvement program
  • Rural community health workers training program
  • Communal harmony, justice and peace (Shanti)
