Fr. Erviti Communal Harmony Youth Sports
The founder of SXSSS Fr. Erviti believed in communal harmony, brotherhood and unity. He made constant efforts to spread the message of peace and harmony to the people in different areas. One of the tools he used to spread this message is cricket in early 80’s. Cricket is a sport that attracts people of all the ages. Initially we organized this tournament with 8 teams of youth belonging to different religions and castes from different working areas.
Continuing Fr. Erviti’s efforts to maintain harmony and peace Fr. Erviti Communal Harmony Cricket Tournament is organized every year in January and February. It has proved to be a very important tool to provide youth with a stage to come out with their abilities, get united and express the feelings of unity and harmony through the medium of cricket. The participating teams consist of the members from different religion, caste and localities. Youth from different backgrounds come to a common stage to play. We have been successful to create cordial environment in which all the matches are played. “Sang De Sathi” (Support one another) – the slogan of the series remains the “spirit” of the youth movement in the form of cricket tournament.
Now 32 teams from different areas participate in the tournament. The entire event of the cricket tournament spreads over two months. The tournament provides the youth with a much needed stage to show their leadership. Leading members of the youth take up a leading role in the entire tournament starting from meticulously planning to execution and completion of the event.
Similarly in order to provide an equal platform to the teenage girls from our slum areas Yuvati Ramatotsava is organized each year for the teenage girls of our working areas in the month of January. A number of sports are organized on the day for the girls to bring out their ability to the best. The development of these girls has become an important programme. In urban slums social constraints do not allow teenage girls to come out of their houses. Sports day allows them to come out play in a free environment and breathe fresh air. Sports day also bring the members of the different teenage girls’ groups together and strengthen the relationship between them.
